The following are not necessarily required, but will really help
- Maxed StimZ
- Level 30+ Long Range Units
- Level 30+ Tanks
- Level 30+ Surgeon/Sawbones
- Level 30+ Gunner Units
A lot of my guildmates often ask how to successfully defend against Dubai expert. The answer really depends on the units available, but I wanted to provide some of my experiences and what I found success with.
Generally I find that a mix of long range units, high level tanks and medium range gunners is the combination. To get high trophy count though, a supporting unit such as the Surgeon or Sawbones is a must.
Below is the image of what I typically bring in to Dubai as my A-Team:
I don't always have access to a level 41 Deforester, but a borrowed Level 30+ TB will work the same way for the way I play.
I like having 4 snipers to start with, because I can begin the map with at least 4 snipers poised to take down the zombies. I have a combination of sharpshooters and deadshots. The deadshots take out the mutated zombies, while the sharpshooters are powerful enough to take down the behemoth.
Gunslingers are medium range, and her rapid fire helps clean up a lot of drones, clearing way for the tanks to focus on the mutated zombies.
Getting to know the zombies of Dubai Expert
The following zombies are expected for Dubai expert:
The harbinger is the most difficult to deal with, the explosions are high in damage, and is often the cause of headaches
The behemoth is what absorbs most of the attacks, while the undertaker constantly revives them
The Rancher/Gormandizer combination after the buffs in 3.6 is proving to be effective. The gormandizer will easily take down your units after consuming a drone, which seem to be endless thanks to the Ranchers.
Analyzing the maps, for unit placement
There are different layouts for Dubai, and some are easier than others. The more open maps can be difficult, so initial unit placement is critical, as well as the subsequent supplemental placements. The example I will use is below:
This is an open map, with the objective buildings at the top. The goal is to keep the zombies away from them as long as possible, and the best place is for them to be in the middle open space.
Knowing where the first wave will begin is critical here, and also the path that they will take. The initial unit placement will determine the course of the fight if you can contain the first wave easily.
Initial unit placement
I have found the following to be most effective when placing my units:
- All long range units clustered together where they will have minimal chance of being approached by the zombies first
- Have a Tank, Gunslinger, Sawbones together in one pad. This is more effective than you might believe.
- Place the tanks where they will attract the most attention from the zombies, then place the long ranged units further away, but have clear sight to the tanks, so they can shoot in that direction
In this map, since the goal is to have the zombies cluster in the middle, I want to give my snipers the highest chance of survival, so I place them at the bottom of the map where there is a 5-pad. Then I protect them by putting my Tank/Gunner/Surgeon combo next to them.
I also place another tank with the Sensei, in anticipation of the future waves.
Reinforcing the units
With the initial setup, the first wave will be easily cleared, and during this time, your other units will have completed the deployment cooldown for reinforcements. This is where you want to reinforce where the zombies are intended to be: The middle area.
The top left pad has a sensei and TB, while the pad next to it is still bare. I typically would support the left pad with another TB, and then drop the Tank/Gunner/Surgeon combo in the pad to the right. All snipers are placed on the bottom of the map.
Healing the units, and support them!
Healing the tanks can sometimes mean the difference between winning a map or losing both buildings. Your tanks are going to get hurt. A lot. The harbingers explode in their faces and it's no joke. They will almost always be low on health, so it's important to heal them when possible. Usually when I can, I always reinforce the T/G/S combo with another tank, so when one dies, the other one holds the horde back while the surgeon revives. Be watchful for when both tanks health is low.
The sprinters can typically kill the surgeon faster than she can revive a downed tank, so if you see any units down in health, and have a maxed out StimZ, use it liberally on them. Flaring the zombies away while molotoving can also help, but I have found less need for them using the strategy I play.
With this layout, this is the end result of my play:
I do lose a few units, so I more often than not do not get perfect scores, but I usually always finish with perfect timed scores, and sometimes if my sawbones revives quickly enough, I don't lose any other points.
When will this not work - Choosing not to defend both buildings!
Sometimes having a lot of snipers won't work in Dubai Expert. There are at least 2 map layouts where they don't benefit me nearly as much as I would like. The layouts are ones where I am forced to make a decision and split up my forces to defend both buildings.
In this case, I sometimes find that giving up on one building from the start is the best way to go. Cut the loss right from the start and fortify the position for another building that is easier to defend. You will lost about 300 points for the building, but it would mean you net ~1200 trophies in the end. There will undoubtedly other advanced strategies specifically for those types of maps that will allow you to still get maximum trophies, I look forward to learning about them
Added more maps as I go through them, now with Hacker/Gunsmith added to the mix!
Map variation 1:
This is the easiest map to defend, since there is only one entry to the buildings. Keep your tanks/gunners/revival units in the middle, and have the snipers situated right next to the buildings to take down the large enemies
Notice in this image how far the Surgeon is standing from the Fire Chief and Timber Beast, completely safe from any explosions that might occur
